Gretchen Abell is currently
an individual and family counselor as well as a Mentoring Specialist
with the Northern Virginia Counseling Group, Home Based Services,
Inc.
Ms. Abell graduated from Boston University in May 1997 with
a Bachelors of Science in Health and Rehabilitation. She then
went on to receive her Master of Science in Rehabilitation
Counseling from Boston University in May 1999. At that time,
Ms. Abell also became a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor
(C.R.C.)
During her two years of graduate school, Ms. Abell
worked in a therapeutic day school in Boston, Massachusetts.
During her time there, she worked with at-risk youth from Boston
and the surrounding areas as an assistant teacher in Language
Arts, Math and Physical Education. Upon her completion of a
graduate degree, she became a Career Counselor and was responsible
for job development, job coaching, conducting career exploration
with the students as well as providing crisis prevention and
therapeutic interventions.
Originally from Oakland, California,
Ms. Abell went to Boston University to participate in rowing
where she was a coxswain for the Woman's Varsity Crew Team
for four years. During the summer, Ms. Abell coached, and eventually
ran, a summer rowing program also at Boston University. During
graduate school she was an assistant coach at Boston University
and upon her graduation, Ms. Abell became an assistant rowing
coach at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
After moving to this area in March 2000, Ms. Abell accepted
a position with the Northern Virginia Counseling Group Home
Based Services, Inc.
